Of 40 Australian retailers, 21 publish a free shipping threshold, 5 refuse change-of-mind returns outright, and 12 start the return window on the day you buy rather than the day it arrives. None had published a 2026 Christmas cut-off date as at 3 September 2026.

Every retailer publishes this somewhere. No retailer publishes anyone else’s, and nobody joins them up, which means the question every gift buyer actually asks has never had a single answer: if I buy it here and it is wrong, what happens?

The column that matters most is the last one. A thirty day return window sounds generous until you notice it starts the day you pay, not the day Dad opens it. 12 of these 40 work that way, and buying five weeks early spends half the window on wrapping paper.

How to read the last column

It is our read, not the retailer’s. It takes the published window, subtracts a fortnight where the clock starts at purchase rather than delivery, and sorts the result: generous is over six weeks of usable time, workable is over three, tight is less, and no returns means they have said plainly that change of mind is not accepted.

What this cannot tell you

A policy is what a retailer has written down, not what they will do. Several of the more generous ones here are generous in practice beyond what they publish, and at least one publishes a Christmas cut-off table with no year on it, which is why that column does not exist yet.

Consumer guarantees sit underneath all of it. A faulty, unsafe or misdescribed product carries a remedy no store policy can remove, whatever the table says. What your rights actually are.
