Black Friday in Australia: the dates, and which discounts are actually real

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November, with Cyber Monday on 30 November. Australians were forecast to spend $6.8 billion over the 2025 weekend. A discount is only genuine if the higher price was actually charged for a meaningful period beforehand, and the Federal Court used twelve weeks as its benchmark in May 2026.

Black Friday arrived in Australia as a curiosity and is now the largest retail weekend of the year, comfortably ahead of Boxing Day. The Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan put the 2025 Black Friday to Cyber Monday weekend at $6.8 billion, up 4% on the year before, from about six million shoppers spending an average of $804 each.

A quarter of them said they were buying Christmas gifts.

That second fact is the one this page is really about, because it means most Black Friday buying is happening against a deadline that nobody selling to you has any reason to mention.

The window between Black Friday and the Christmas posting deadlineBlack Friday 2026 falls on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November. Using the 2025 Parcel Post cut-offs as a guide, the last posting day from New South Wales ranged from 16 December for the Northern Territory to 22 December within New South Wales. That leaves roughly nineteen days between Black Friday and the earliest cut-off, and about twenty-five days before the latest. A quarter of Black Friday shoppers say they are buying Christmas gifts, and dispatch time comes out of that window before the parcel is even collected. You have about three weeks, not five27 November to the last day you can post a parcelposting cut-offs16 to 22 Dec, by destination19 days at the outsideBlack FridayFri 27 NovCyber MondayMon 30 NovChristmasFri 25 DecDispatch comes out of that window first“Dispatched within 2 business days” plus 3 to 6 business days interstate is up to a fortnight in calendar time.
Black Friday 2026 is Friday 27 November. Cut-off band is the 2025 Parcel Post range from NSW; Australia Post had not published 2026 dates as at 3 September 2026. The retailer’s dispatch time comes out of the window before the parcel is collected.

The dates

Black Friday is the day after American Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday in November. It moves every year.

  • Black Friday 2026: Friday 27 November.
  • Cyber Monday 2026: Monday 30 November.
  • Black Friday 2027: Friday 26 November.
  • Australian retailers now routinely start a week early and run through the following week, so the “weekend” is closer to a fortnight.

The scale, and what people actually buy

The ARA and Roy Morgan forecast $6.8 billion across the four days from 28 November to 1 December 2025, from a Snap SMS survey of 2,898 Australians aged 18 and over conducted between 14 and 20 October 2025. Around 3.5 million women and 2.5 million men, averaging $750 and $882 respectively.

The most popular categories were clothing and shoes at 45%, toys at 34%, books at 33%, and interiors and décor at 32%. The reasons given were low prices at 42%, great deals at 38%, and saving money on Christmas gifts at 25%.

Read that category list as a warning rather than a shopping list. Clothing is where everyone goes, and it is the hardest gift to make feel considered.

Which discounts are real: the twelve week test

A crossed-out price is not a fact about a product. It is a claim about the past, and until recently very little turned on whether it was true.

On 14 May 2026 the Federal Court found that Coles had engaged in misleading conduct over Down Down pricing, with thirteen of fourteen pricing tickets found likely to deceive an ordinary consumer, across an ACCC case covering 245 household products between February 2022 and May 2023.

Justice O’Bryan’s benchmark is the useful part. He said that a consumer told the product had ordinarily sold at the higher price for a period materially shorter than twelve weeks would not believe the promoted price was a genuine discount. Twelve weeks came from Coles’s own internal pricing policy.

So the test is not whether the saving looks big. It is whether the product genuinely sat at the higher price for about three months first, which is exactly the thing you cannot see from the product page.

The four Black Friday tricks the ACCC has named

The regulator has been specific about the practices it is watching over this weekend, and all four are easy to spot once you know the shape of them.

  • Sitewide discount claims that quietly exclude a large share of the catalogue.
  • Was and now pricing where the “was” has no genuine prior sale history behind it.
  • “Up to X% off” where the X applies to a handful of products and almost nothing you would want.
  • Countdown timers that reset, or keep showing the same discount after they expire.

The penalties are not theoretical

The Good Guys paid $13.5 million in penalties for misleading conduct. Webjet paid $9 million over an advertisement for $18 fares that were actually three times that. Dell Australia paid $10 million in 2023 over strikethrough pricing on monitors sold as add-ons.

None of that helps you at the moment of buying. It does tell you that the practice is common enough, and profitable enough, to be worth a regulator’s time repeatedly.

The deadline nobody selling to you will mention

Here is the part that matters most if you are buying gifts rather than buying for yourself.

Black Friday 2026 is 27 November. Australia Post’s Parcel Post cut-offs in 2025 ran from 16 December for the Northern Territory to 22 December within New South Wales, depending on where you send from and where it goes. There is no single national date, and Australia Post had not published 2026 dates as at 3 September 2026.

That gives you roughly nineteen days from Black Friday to the earliest cut-off. It sounds like plenty. It is not, because the retailer’s dispatch time comes out of it before Australia Post touches the parcel, and a dispatch window of one to two business days plus three to six business days interstate is up to a fortnight in calendar time.

The practical rule: anything ordered on Black Friday for a Christmas delivery outside a capital city is comfortable. Anything ordered in the following fortnight is not as comfortable as the calendar makes it look.

What we do differently on this weekend

We do not run a Black Friday deals page, and that is deliberate rather than lazy. We cannot verify a before-price any better than you can, so a page of savings we have not checked would contradict everything else on this site.

What we do instead is record the price of every product on this site and print the date we read it. Since September 2026 we have also kept every price change, which means that by late November we will be able to say what a thing cost in October rather than what a retailer says it cost.

That is not a discount. It is the one piece of information that lets you judge one.

How to shop the weekend without being had

Four rules, in order of how much they save you.

  • Decide whether the actual price is worth paying. Ignore the saving entirely. If it is only attractive because of the crossed-out number, you are buying the sticker.
  • Write your list before the sale starts. A gift chosen because it was discounted is the gift that gets returned on 27 December.
  • Screenshot the page if the amount matters. It is the only price history you will have if the order goes wrong.
  • Check the delivery estimate, not the dispatch estimate. They are different questions and only one of them answers whether it arrives.

Common questions

When is Black Friday 2026 in Australia?
Friday 27 November 2026, with Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November. Black Friday is the day after American Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday in November, so the date moves each year.
How much do Australians spend on Black Friday?
The Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan forecast $6.8 billion across the 2025 Black Friday to Cyber Monday weekend, up 4% on 2024, from about six million shoppers spending an average of $804 each.
How can you tell if a Black Friday discount is real?
A discount is only genuine if the product actually sold at the higher price for a meaningful period beforehand. In May 2026 the Federal Court used twelve weeks as its benchmark when it found thirteen of fourteen Coles Down Down tickets misleading.
Is Black Friday early enough to order Christmas gifts?
Usually, but with less room than it appears. Black Friday 2026 is 27 November and the 2025 Parcel Post cut-offs ran from 16 to 22 December depending on destination, so there are roughly nineteen days to the earliest one, and the retailer’s dispatch time comes out of that first.
