What are the Australia Post Christmas cut-off dates for 2026?

Parcel Post depends on where you send from and where it is going. Within your own state the last day is Tuesday 22 December. Between New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia it is Monday 21 December. Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory close earlier, and the earliest date in the whole table is Monday 14 December, into the Northern Territory from Queensland, Western Australia or Tasmania, and from the Northern Territory to Tasmania.

Australia Post’s conditions sit under every date: metro to metro, lodged over the counter by 2.30pm. Geelong, the Gold Coast and Newcastle count as metro. A regional or rural address needs extra time, and Australia Post does not say how much.

Express Post closes on Wednesday 23 December between New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania, and within any one state. It closes a day earlier, on Tuesday 22 December, to Western Australia, to the Northern Territory and from Western Australia.

Christmas cards close on Friday 18 December interstate and Monday 21 December within the same state. A card stamp is 65c during November and December.

Is there one national Christmas cut-off date?

This is the part almost every guide gets wrong, and it is the part that actually costs people a present.

Australia Post publishes a matrix. A parcel from Sydney to a Sydney suburb and a parcel from Sydney to Alice Springs are not the same journey. Posting Parcel Post out of New South Wales this year, the last day runs from Wednesday 16 December for the Northern Territory to Tuesday 22 December within New South Wales, six days apart. Out of Queensland it is wider: Monday 14 December to the Northern Territory, Thursday 17 December to Western Australia, Friday 18 December to Tasmania and Tuesday 22 December within Queensland, eight days from first to last.

A page that prints one national date is right for some readers and days late for others, and the ones it is late for are the ones furthest from a capital city. That is not a rounding error. That is a present arriving in January.

When do I need to post overseas for Christmas?

Internationally the service matters as much as the country. Economy Air is the cheapest and closes first, in late November for most of the world. Courier closes last, on 15 December, wherever it is offered.

Sending from South Australia, Tasmania or the Northern Territory, Australia Post says the item travels interstate before it leaves the country: add two business days for Express and five for Standard and Economy.

What is the difference between post by and order by?

The cut-off dates cover a parcel you take to a post office. They do not cover a gift you buy online.

For an online order you have to add the retailer’s dispatch time to the transit time. A retailer advertising "dispatched within 2 business days" and a service quoting 3 to 6 business days is a nine business day window in the worst case, which in December, with weekends and public holidays removed, is most of a fortnight.

The practical rule: work backwards from the day it needs to arrive, subtract the transit range, subtract the dispatch window, and then subtract two more days because December is the one month of the year when the network is genuinely at capacity. If that lands before you are reading this, buy something that does not need posting.

What is the last day to order online for Christmas 2026?

An online order has to be packed and handed to Australia Post before its cut-off means anything, so the date that matters is earlier. Allowing three business days for the retailer to pack and dispatch, which is a cautious allowance rather than any one retailer’s promise, the Parcel Post arithmetic works out like this:

• Within your own state: order by Thursday 17 December.
• Between New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia: order by Wednesday 16 December.
• To Western Australia: order by Tuesday 15 December from New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria or South Australia, and by Monday 14 December from Queensland.
• To the Northern Territory: order by Friday 11 December from New South Wales, the ACT or Victoria, and by Wednesday 9 December from Queensland.
• By Express Post anywhere but Western Australia and the Northern Territory: order by Friday 18 December.

When this page changes

That list is our arithmetic, not Australia Post’s, and it assumes a metro address. When a retailer publishes its own Christmas cut-off, the retailer’s date wins. The delivery clock on this site does the same sum for each kind of gift and turns amber when it is getting tight.

We read Australia Post’s page rather than other people’s summaries of it, and this post carries the date we last looked. Until 14 October 2026 it carried last year’s dates as a planning guide, because Australia Post had released nothing newer when we checked on 25 September. That day we replaced them with the real table. If Australia Post moves a date, the table moves and so does the date at the top.
