What are the Australia Post Christmas cut-off dates for 2026?

We checked the Australia Post Christmas sending dates page on 3 September 2026. It shows 2025 dates throughout. There is no 2026 table, and no note saying when one is coming.

The pattern in recent years has been a release around October. Until that happens, the only correct answer to "what is the 2026 cut-off" is that Australia Post has not said, and anyone giving you a date has taken last year’s and hoped.

The exception is international sea mail, which is published much earlier because the transit times are so long. Some 2026 sea mail cut-offs have already passed. If you are posting a gift overseas by the cheapest service, check that before you do anything else.

Is there one national Christmas cut-off date?

This is the part almost every guide gets wrong, and it is the part that actually costs people a present.

Australia Post publishes a matrix. The last posting day depends on where you are sending from and where it is going, because a parcel from Sydney to a Sydney suburb and a parcel from Sydney to Alice Springs are not the same journey. In 2025, posting Parcel Post out of New South Wales, the deadline ranged from 16 December for the Northern Territory to 22 December within New South Wales. Six days apart.

A page that prints "post by 20 December" is right for some readers and six days late for others, and the ones it is late for are the ones furthest from a capital city. That is not a rounding error. That is a present arriving in January.

What is the difference between post by and order by?

The cut-off dates cover a parcel you take to a post office. They do not cover a gift you buy online.

For an online order you have to add the retailer’s dispatch time to the transit time. A retailer advertising "dispatched within 2 business days" and a service quoting 3 to 6 business days is a nine business day window in the worst case, which in December, with weekends and public holidays removed, is most of a fortnight.

The practical rule: work backwards from the day it needs to arrive, subtract the transit range, subtract the dispatch window, and then subtract two more days because December is the one month of the year when the network is genuinely at capacity. If that lands before you are reading this, buy something that does not need posting.

What should I do while the 2026 dates are unpublished?

Use last year’s dates as a planning assumption, not as a deadline. They are the right shape and roughly the right week, and they are the best available information until October.

Then treat anything you are ordering online in the second week of December as at risk, and anything after about the 15th as a gamble unless it is Express Post inside the next-day network, digital, or an experience voucher that arrives by email.

• Planning from last year’s dates is reasonable. Quoting them as this year’s is not.
• Check your own state pair, not a national headline.
• Add the retailer’s dispatch time. It is not included in any cut-off date.
• Digital gifts have no cut-off, which is why they exist.
