The delivery clock
Will it actually get there in time?
Retailers advertise dispatch times, which is when the parcel leaves them. That is not the same as when it lands with you, and the difference is rarely published anywhere. So we worked it out.
As at 1 November 2026, Christmas is 39 working days away: an emailed voucher arrives today, an express parcel needs 3 working days, standard post 6, and freight 10.
How to read it
Green means there is a comfortable margin. Amber means order today and check the merchant’s own cut-off before you commit. Red means the window has closed for that kind of gift, and we stop recommending it.
The clock counts business days, skipping weekends and public holidays, then compares that against a realistic lead time for each kind of gift. A voucher is instant. A generator is not.
The thing most people get wrong
Merchants set their own dispatch deadlines, and they are usually much earlier than the post network requires. Several Australian hamper merchants publish a seasonal dispatch cut-off a full week before the occasion, independently of anything the postal network requires, and that earlier date is the one that actually binds. Amber is a prompt to go and read their delivery page.
Australia Post’s Christmas 2026 dates
Parcel Post closes on Tuesday 22 December within your own state and on Monday 21 December between New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. Western Australia closes on Friday 18 December from New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria and South Australia and a day earlier from Queensland, and the Northern Territory as early as Monday 14 December. Express Post runs to Wednesday 23 December. The clock assumes a metro address in the east, so for Western Australia, Tasmania or the Territory take a few days off what it says. Every state pair, read 14 October 2026
