More on buying for the whisky dad

The problem with buying whisky for someone who likes whisky is that he has already bought the bottle he wants. His shelf is the record of every decision he has already made, so a bottle chosen by someone else is either something he passed over or something he already owns.

Tastings solve this, and it is not a compromise. A flight of four or five he has not tried is a genuinely better gift than a full bottle, because the value is in the discovery rather than the volume, and it costs less than a decent single malt. The other reliable answer is glassware, which almost nobody buys for themselves and which measurably changes what a whisky smells like.
