Football is the one code where the club usually came first and the country came later, and it is often a club he chose as a boy for a reason nobody else in the house remembers. That makes the shirt a more personal object than it looks, and it makes guessing the club a worse idea here than in any other sport.
The other thing worth knowing is that a replica shirt is not one product. There is a fan version, cut loose and made to wear to the pub, and a player version, cut tight and made to play in. A dad who wants one and is given the other will not say anything, and will not wear it either. Ask, or buy the retro shirt from a season he actually watched, which sidesteps the question entirely.
Nobody plans a gift in advance because nobody remembers the date until it is too late to post anything. We will email you before Father’s Day and before Christmas, with the shortlist already narrowed and the delivery window still open.
