What it is

An all-in-one unit that adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto to a factory screen and runs its own streaming apps on top, rather than only mirroring a phone.

Why we picked it

The step up from a plain adapter: the apps run on the box rather than on his phone, so the phone battery is not carrying the trip and a passenger can change what is playing without handing the driver their phone. Same legal limit as any in-car video, it is for a stopped car and for passengers. If he only ever wanted the cable gone, the $62 Mini Cube does that and this is more device than he needs.
