The dad who likes a G and T and likes knowing how things are made, not the non-drinker or anyone who bristles at group activities.
What it is
A 1.5 hour hands-on gin class at 65A McLachlan Avenue, Darlinghurst NSW, covering a distillery tour and an explanation of how gin is made. Participants trial three botanical distillate blends, build a personalised recipe, and take home a 200ml bottle of their own blend. Light nibbles are provided throughout, public classes run for 1 to 12 guests and private classes for 4 to 30.
Why we picked it
This is the answer to the dad who says he does not want anything, because he leaves holding a bottle with his own recipe in it, which is a souvenir no shop can sell you. It is short enough to slot into a Saturday afternoon without eating the day, and hands-on enough that he is doing something rather than being talked at. The distillery tour front-loads the how-it-works part that men who like process actually want. At $140 with a bottle included it is close to what a decent gin costs anyway, which makes the maths easy to explain to him.
